Skip Norwalk as a base: it is a 1-night commuter stop between LA and Long Beach, worth a half-day for the Hargitt House and Golf N Stuff.

Norwalk is a working Los Angeles County suburb 17 miles southeast of Downtown LA, on the Metrolink and Metro C Line. It has one small museum, a mini-golf and go-kart park, and cheap motels near the freeways. Almost every traveller passes through rather than stays: use it for a night between LA and Long Beach, or a half-day if you are already in the Gateway Cities.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Norwalk Transit System buses run local routes; fares are $1.25. The Metro C Line and Metrolink stop at Norwalk Station on Hoxie Ave, which is the practical way in and out. A car is the only comfortable way to reach the museums, Golf N Stuff and the freeway-side motels; rideshare is thin outside the station area.

Watch out

Safety

Norwalk is a normal LA County suburb: daytime errands and the station area are fine, but keep to lit streets after dark, do not leave bags visible in a parked car, and treat very cheap motels with caution.
  • This is a car suburb: pavements are long, crossings are wide and summer afternoons are hot.
  • Motels on Firestone and Imperial are cheap for a reason — read recent reviews and check the room before paying.
  • Metrolink runs mostly on weekdays and stops early; check the last train before you plan an evening out.
  • Freeway traffic on I-5 and I-605 peaks 07:00–09:30 and 15:30–19:00; add 20–30 min to any drive.
