  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Cerritos sits where the 91 and 605 freeways cross in southeast Los Angeles County, about 25–30 minutes by car from Disneyland and Long Beach. It is a residential and retail city with one genuinely odd draw — a titanium-skinned public library — plus a performing-arts centre, a large mall and a Korean and Chinese restaurant strip on South Street. Almost nobody needs more than one night, and most travellers pass through.

Metro and Norwalk Transit buses link to the wider county; Metro day pass about $7, OCTA day pass about $5. Rideshare from LAX runs roughly $45–70 depending on traffic.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime, well-lit suburb; the real risks are freeway traffic, fast turns on arterials and summer heat. Standard US city precautions apply after dark around the mall and hotel strips.
  • Freeway traffic on the 91 and 605 peaks 7–9am and 3–7pm; add 30 min to any drive in those windows.
  • Sidewalks are sparse along some arterials and drivers turn fast — cross at signals.
  • Summer inland heat: July–September highs often 30–35 °C, with little shade at bus stops.
  • Non-resident library cards cost about $100 a year; you can still walk in and look around.
  • Most hotels sit on commercial strips with no evening foot traffic — plan dinner before you park.
