Go for one full day from St Petersburg: the old town and castle walk takes 3–4 hours, and the 1 h 15 min express train runs 5–10 times daily.
Vyborg is a small, walkable border city 130 km northwest of St Petersburg, on the Gulf of Finland near the Finnish frontier. It was Finland's second city until 1944, and the Swedish-built castle, the old walls and the Alvar Aalto library sit within a 3–4 hour walking loop. Most travellers see it as a day trip by express train; a night buys you the Monrepos park and a slower morning. Finland's border with Russia is closed, so the city is reached from the Russian side only.
