Vyborg
Выборг
Go for one full day from St Petersburg: the old town and castle walk takes 3–4 hours, and the 1 h 15 min express train runs 5–10 times daily.
Vyborg is a small, walkable border city 130 km northwest of St Petersburg, on the Gulf of Finland near the Finnish frontier. It was Finland's second city until 1944, and the Swedish-built castle, the old walls and the Alvar Aalto library sit within a 3–4 hour walking loop. Most travellers see it as a day trip by express train; a night buys you the Monrepos park and a slower morning. Finland's border with Russia is closed, so the city is reached from the Russian side only.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- Finland's border with Russia is closed; enter from the Russian side and check your own government's travel advice before booking anything.
- Carry your passport and migration card: police checks are routine in border regions.
- Card payments from foreign-issued cards often fail; carry enough rubles in cash for the day.
- Many sights are seasonal or under repair: confirm the castle, tower and Monrepos opening before you travel.
- The walk through the Stone City between the Council House Tower and the Clock Tower is the least scenic stretch; keep going, it is short.
Vyborg is a quiet small city and street crime is low; the real friction is border-region paperwork, card payments that fail and winter ice on the pavements. Read your government's Russia advice first.
