Tomsk is a Siberian university city on the River Tom, founded in 1604 and bypassed by the Trans-Siberian, which kept its old centre intact. About 15% of residents are students, so English is more common here than in most Siberian cities. The centre is small and walkable; two nights covers it, and most travellers arrive by plane or by the rail branch from Taiga.

Walk the centre: most sights sit between Lenin Square and the universities. Buses and trams cost about RUB 32. Taxis run about RUB 150–200 across the city; book by app rather than hailing on the street, and expect no English from drivers.

Watch out

Safety

Tomsk is calm by Siberian standards; the real risks are winter ice, street drinking fines and taxi overcharging. Carry your passport and migration card, and check your government's advice before booking.
  • Don't drink alcohol on the street; police can fine you.
  • Drug laws are enforced with zero tolerance, including small amounts.
  • Hail taxis can overcharge foreigners: use an app or a booked dispatcher.
  • Supermarkets stop selling spirits at 22:00; beer stays available later at bar-shops.
  • Winter ice on pavements and steps is the main injury risk from November to March.
