Atlixco is a small Puebla-state town 30 minutes from Puebla city, known for commercial flower growing, a flower festival, a hilltop chapel and a town hall covered in murals. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the reason to sleep here is a festival date or a slower pace than Puebla. Most travellers see it as a day trip and are done by dark.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable; the Cerro de San Miguel climb is about 20 min on stairs from downtown. Taxis wait near the main plaza for outlying hotels and the balnearios. Buses and combis link Atlixco with Puebla through the day.

Watch out

Safety

Atlixco is a small town and the centre is calm by day and early evening. Use normal Mexican city care: taxis after dark rather than unlit highway shoulders, and check current state travel advice before you go.
  • Festival dates (El Huey Atlixcayotl, Day of the Dead) fill hotels: book weeks ahead or come as a day trip.
  • Afternoon rain from May to October; carry a light shell.
  • Some outlying hotels and balnearios are on the highway with no pavement: take a taxi after dark.
  • Altitude is around 1,900 (≈ US$110) m: the hill climb is short but steep if you are not acclimatised.
