Tepoztlán is a small Pueblos Mágicos town about 1.5 h south of Mexico City, under cliffs with a pyramid on top. The core is a few blocks: market, former Dominican convent, food street. One night covers the hike and the town; two nights add a spa or a temazcal. Most visitors come from Mexico City without a car.

Getting around

Walk. The centre is flat and small; the bus terminal sits on the edge of town, 20–30 min on foot or about MXN 40–50 by taxi. Taxis wait at sitios near the square and the trailhead. Local buses run to Cuernavaca and nearby towns.

Watch out

Safety

Tepoztlán is a small, busy tourist town and generally safe by day. Main risks are the hike (heat, slick stairs, no railings in parts) and petty theft in the Sunday market: keep bags zipped and don't leave valuables at the trailhead.
  • The Tepozteco trail is 400 m of stone stairs, up to 2 h each way; start early, carry water, wear grippy shoes.
  • Coatis (tejón) at the top open backpacks for food; feeding them is prohibited.
  • The convent/museum was damaged in the 2017 earthquake and has closed at times: check before you go.
  • Rainy season makes the stairs slick; afternoon storms are common May–Oct.
  • December nights can be loud from church bells.
