Give Tamworth one night as a New England Highway stop, or two if you want the country-music sights; skip it entirely in late January unless you book 6–12 months ahead.
Tamworth is a regional centre of about 43,000 on the Peel River, inland between Newcastle and Brisbane on the New England Highway. It is the self-styled country music capital of Australia and hosts a two-week festival in late January that fills every bed in the district. Outside festival weeks it is a calm, walkable country town with a compact Peel Street mall, river parks and a handful of music and horse-heritage sights. Most travellers pass through on the inland drive; one night covers the town, two lets you add Nundle or the lookouts without rushing.

Peel Street mall walks end to end in about 20 minutes, and paths run through the parks to the Peel River. For anything else — the botanic garden, the airport, the motels on Goonoo Goonoo Road — a car is the practical choice. Local buses run weekdays and Saturday; during the January festival special circuit buses serve the city.
