Kuta
Base in Kuta for 2–3 nights only if you want the airport, the surf beach and nightlife in one walkable strip; otherwise sleep in Seminyak or Sanur.
Kuta is Bali's original beach resort and the closest town to Ngurah Rai airport (DPS), about 15 minutes by taxi. The 5 km beach is broad and sandy, good for beginner surf, and the lanes behind it hold hundreds of guesthouses, warungs and bars. It is crowded, congested and tout-heavy, and most travellers use it as an arrival night or a young-party base rather than a whole holiday.

Safety
- Touts on the street and in restaurants: a polite no is enough, keep walking.
- Beach massage and board-rental operators: agree the price and the time before you start, and check the board for cracks.
- Taxi drivers who refuse the meter, especially on Jalan Legian at night; walk on and flag a Bluebird.
- Rip currents and a shore break on Kuta Beach; swim between the red-yellow flags and near lifeguards.
- Nyepi: everything on Bali closes for 24 h, including the airport — check the date before booking.
