Dover

Give Dover one full day for the castle and the cliffs, sleep one night, then move on: the town itself is a port, not a base.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Dover is the closest port to mainland Europe, 21 miles from Calais, and the busiest cross-Channel port in the UK. Travellers come for two things: Dover Castle, with its Roman lighthouse and the wartime tunnels where the Dunkirk evacuation was planned, and the White Cliffs. The town centre is small and plain; most of the day is spent on Castle Hill or on the cliff path. One night covers it. Two nights only if you want the cliffs, Samphire Hoe and a day trip to Canterbury or Deal.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Dover is walkable: the centre, the castle gate and the seafront are within about 20 minutes of each other. Stagecoach East Kent runs local buses to Deal, Folkestone and Canterbury. There is no shuttle between Dover Priory station and the ferry port, so plan a taxi or a 2.25 km walk with bags. Southeastern is the train operator.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Canterbury

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train from Dover Priory, about 30 min, or Stagecoach bus

Cathedral and old streets; half a day is enough if you start early.

Folkestone

go

Door to door: About 35 min

Train from Dover Priory, about 20 min

Creative quarter and harbour arm; easy half day.

Deal and St Margaret's Bay

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Bus or train to Deal, then local bus or taxi to the bay

St Margaret's Bay is the closest pub to France and breaks up the cliffs with a small beach.

Ramsgate

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Train from Dover Priory, about 30–40 min

Royal Harbour and sandy beach; pairs well with Broadstairs.

Ashford

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train from Dover Priory, about 30 min

Mainly a rail junction and outlet shopping; go only if changing trains.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Castle Street, Biggin Street, King Street)

Walk to the castle gate and to Dover Priory station; guest houses and small hotels, most of the town's food and pubs.

Seafront and Marine Parade

Channel views, a short walk from the centre; quieter at night.

Ferry port and Eastern Docks area

Only for an early sailing; little else within walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

Dover is a small, safe town by day; the real risks are cliff edges, the steep castle hill and late-night quiet around the port. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • No shuttle bus between Dover Priory station and the ferry port: it is a 2.25 km walk or a taxi.
  • The castle is on a steep hill; the walk up from town takes 15–20 min.
  • Cliff edges near the White Cliffs are unfenced in places and the chalk crumbles: keep back from the edge, especially in wind.
  • Ferry foot-passenger crossings are limited and not every operator takes foot passengers: check before booking.
  • Cross-Channel sailings can be delayed by weather; leave a buffer if you have a flight or train onward.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Dover. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (cold, wet, short days; castle hours reduced) · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for London airports: last train times to Dover Priory, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: castle hill, town centre and seafront, White Cliffs and Langdon, Samphire Hoe.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours and last entry (Dover Castle, Roman Painted House, Dover Museum, South Foreland Lighthouse) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Ferry-day fixtures so foot-passenger and car crossings can go green.
