Dover
Give Dover one full day for the castle and the cliffs, sleep one night, then move on: the town itself is a port, not a base.
Dover is the closest port to mainland Europe, 21 miles from Calais, and the busiest cross-Channel port in the UK. Travellers come for two things: Dover Castle, with its Roman lighthouse and the wartime tunnels where the Dunkirk evacuation was planned, and the White Cliffs. The town centre is small and plain; most of the day is spent on Castle Hill or on the cliff path. One night covers it. Two nights only if you want the cliffs, Samphire Hoe and a day trip to Canterbury or Deal.
