Port Lincoln is a working fishing and grain port on the lower Eyre Peninsula, about 14,000 people, wrapped around Boston Bay. It is the base for great white shark cage diving at the Neptune Islands, for Lincoln National Park 15 km south, and for Coffin Bay oysters 45 minutes west. The town itself is a foreshore strip, a marina and a main street; the reason to come is on the water and along the coast. Summer here is milder than Adelaide, winter is wet and windy, and the shark season runs the cooler months.

Getting around

You need a car. The airport is 15 km out, Lincoln National Park is 15 km south and Whaler's Way starts 20 km south, and no bus covers them. Rental cars are available in town and at the airport; bike hire is available locally (check current operators). Taxis cover the town and the airport run. The town centre itself is walkable: Tasman Terrace, the jetty and the foreshore are all within a few minutes of each other.

Drive 15 km south from town; sealed most of the way, then gravel

Emus, kangaroos and goannas near Cape Donnington; bring binoculars for Donnington Island. Stamford Hill is a 1.6 km return walk to the Flinders monument with the best view over town.

Whaler's Way

Drive 20 km south, then a 15 km self-drive loop on private land

Permit about A$30 from the visitor centre, shown at the gate; cliffs, rockpools and seals. Allow 3 h for the loop.

Coffin Bay

Oyster farms, two conservation parks and long beaches; a full day if you add the park.

Watch out

Safety

A safe, small working town; the real risks are wildlife and water (cold Southern Ocean, strong currents, cliff edges), long remote drives with patchy phone signal, and summer heat waves. Standard Australian beach and bush rules apply.
  • Mobile coverage drops outside town: plan for outages on the national park and west-coast roads.
  • Whaler's Way is private land and needs a permit (about A$30 (≈ US$20)) from the visitor centre, shown at the gate; after-hours entry needs a key and a deposit.
  • Shark-cage trips are weather-dependent and sell out in the winter season: book ahead and keep a spare day.
  • Summer heat waves push past 29 °C with nights near 20 °C; the bay is the coolest place to be.
  • Long drives on the Eyre Peninsula have few fuel stops: fill up in town before heading west or north.
