Agali is a small hill town in the Attappadi reserve forest, 80 km from Palakkad and 85 km from Coimbatore, and the nearest place to Silent Valley National Park with beds and food. The park gate at Mukkali is 20 km away and entry needs a phone booking the day before. Come for the forest, the Bhavani river and the drive; do not come for nightlife or a resort strip.

Getting around

Local buses and autorickshaws cover Agali, Goolikkadavu and Mukkali. Buses from Palakkad and Coimbatore run through to Anakkatty on the Tamil Nadu border. Autorickshaws charge about ₹15 per km and bus fares about ₹7 per 3 km. For the park you need your own vehicle or a booked jeep.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime, but this is a remote forest district: the real risks are the rough park road, leeches in the wet months, thin medical cover and Maoist activity in the wider Attappadi area. Do not trek alone.
  • Silent Valley entry needs a phone booking the day before and reporting at the gate between 08:00 and 13:00; no booking, no entry.
  • The park road is unpaved and rough, and wildlife sightings are rare — go for the forest, not for guaranteed animals.
  • Leeches are common in the hills in the wet months; carry table salt.
  • This is a Maoist-affected district; there was an attack on the Silent Valley ticket counter at Mukkali in 2015. Avoid lone treks and take local advice.
  • Card and ATM coverage is thin; carry enough cash in small notes.
