Irkutsk is the gateway to Lake Baikal and a natural break on the Trans-Siberian Railway, roughly halfway between Moscow and Vladivostok. The historic centre is compact and walkable, with Siberian baroque churches, Decembrist house-museums and carved wooden houses standing beside Soviet blocks. Most travellers use it as a two-night stop before or after the lake.

Getting around

The historic centre is compact and walkable. Trams, trolleybuses, buses and marshrutka minibuses cover longer hops; pay the driver on exit on buses and trolleybuses, and buy tram tickets from the driver then stamp them on board. Yandex and Maxim are the common taxi apps; agree the fare or use the app rather than accepting a private driver at the station.

Safety

Irkutsk is generally calm for visitors who use app taxis and stay in the centre. The real risks are winter cold, unlicensed taxis at the station, and pickpocketing on crowded transport; check your government's travel advice for Russia before you book.
  • Unlicensed taxi drivers at the railway station overcharge; a ride to the centre should cost about RUB 200–300.
  • Winter temperatures drop below -20°C; ice, wind chill and short daylight are the real risks.
