Irkutsk is the gateway to Lake Baikal and a natural break on the Trans-Siberian Railway, roughly halfway between Moscow and Vladivostok. The historic centre is compact and walkable, with Siberian baroque churches, Decembrist house-museums and carved wooden houses standing beside Soviet blocks. Most travellers use it as a two-night stop before or after the lake.

The historic centre is compact and walkable. Trams, trolleybuses, buses and marshrutka minibuses cover longer hops; pay the driver on exit on buses and trolleybuses, and buy tram tickets from the driver then stamp them on board.
