Downtown is walkable and compact; everything else — the university, Easton, the suburbs — needs a car or the COTA bus. Two nights covers the core. Three if you add a Buckeyes game or the State Fair.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable — most sights are within a 20-minute walk. COTA buses cover the rest: $2.00 local, $2.75 express, free transfers between local routes. A car helps outside the centre; parking is plentiful and cheap except in the Short North. U-turns are illegal citywide. CoGo bike share has stations Downtown and at Easton.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown, the Short North, German Village and the northwest suburbs are the comfortable zones. Be more careful along Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue after dark, and never leave anything visible in a parked car.
  • Parking: aggressive towing, especially Downtown, on campus and in the Short North. Check for 'Private Parking' or 'Tow Away Zone' signs before you leave the car.
  • Car break-ins are common. Lock valuables in the boot, not on the seat.
  • Kia and Hyundai thefts are a known problem in the 2020s. If you rent one, use a steering wheel lock and never confront a thief.
  • Tornadoes in warm months, icy roads in winter, flooding after long rain.
  • Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, but not all do — watch turning traffic.
