Scams and watch-outs
- Parking: aggressive towing, especially Downtown, on campus and in the Short North. Check for 'Private Parking' or 'Tow Away Zone' signs before you leave the car.
- Car break-ins are common. Lock valuables in the boot, not on the seat.
- Kia and Hyundai thefts are a known problem in the 2020s. If you rent one, use a steering wheel lock and never confront a thief.
- Tornadoes in warm months, icy roads in winter, flooding after long rain.
- Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, but not all do — watch turning traffic.
Downtown, the Short North, German Village and the northwest suburbs are the comfortable zones. Be more careful along Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue after dark, and never leave anything visible in a parked car.
