Halberstadt
Give Halberstadt one full day, or two nights if you want the Harz by tram and train: the cathedral treasury alone is worth the stop.
Halberstadt is the northern gateway to the Harz, 40 minutes by train from Magdeburg and about 1 h 30 min from Halle. The 13th-century cathedral and its medieval treasury, the Liebfrauenkirche opposite, and a church playing a John Cage organ piece until 2640 are the reasons to come. The old town is compact and walkable; the mountains start a few kilometres south.

Getting around
Two tram routes and five bus routes cover the town; single rides are cheap and tickets are bought on board or at stops. The centre itself is small enough to walk: Domplatz to the station is about 15 minutes on foot. For the Harz, regional trains run south towards Wernigerode and Quedlinburg, and the HarzTourCard covers buses, trains and the Schierke–Brocken narrow-gauge line for three days (about €18, family €34.50).

Safety
- Many museums and churches close on Mondays; the Jagdschloss restaurant is closed Mondays too.
- St Burchardi is not a normal sight: the Cage organ plays single notes that change every one to two years, so check before you build a day around it.
- Small guesthouses and some restaurants take cash only; carry euros.
- Sunday shopping is limited to the station area and petrol stations.
