Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Görlitz is Germany's easternmost town, on the Neiße across from Zgorzelec in Poland. It came through the war almost intact, so the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque centre is one of the best preserved in Central Europe, ringed by 19th-century tenements. It is a walkable two-night stop on the Dresden–Wrocław line, not a quick look.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The Old Town and centre are compact and walkable. Two tram lines link the suburbs to the centre; a ride to the outer suburbs takes about 15 min. Buy a ticket and validate it on boarding; tickets also work on local buses. Trams do not cross the Neiße, so cross to Zgorzelec on foot. Görlitz is in the ZVON regional network, and ZVON and Sachsen-Ticket fares cover the town.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Zgorzelec, Poland

go

Door to door: 10–20 min

Walk across the pedestrian bridge over the Neisse

Take your passport or ID; the far bank gives the best view back at the Old Town.

Bautzen

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Regional train, about 45–60 min

Old town above the Spree; pairs well with a half day.

Zittau

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Regional train toward the Czech–Polish border

Gateway to the Zittau Mountains; some trains continue to Liberec.

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Train and bus via Weißwasser

Muskau Park, a cross-border landscape park; a full day.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train toward Löbau, then bus

Moravian settlement with a small museum; half a day.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Regional train, about 1 h

Do it as a stop on the way in or out, not as a return day trip.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old Town (Altstadt)

Everything on foot: Obermarkt, Untermarkt, the church and the river. Best for a short stay.

Around the station (Bahnhof Görlitz)

Cheaper rooms and quick trains; 10–15 min walk into the Old Town.

Weinhübel

Quiet, south of the centre; tram 1 or the RB65 train, then a walk. Only if you want a campground or hostel.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small city; the real risks are the border paperwork for the Zgorzelec walk, uneven cobbles after rain, and winter ice on the Landeskrone path.
  • The Neiße is the border: carry your passport or ID card if you walk into Zgorzelec, and check current border rules before you go.
  • Many Old Town restaurants close one day a week and kitchens stop early; check hours the same day.
  • The station is a 10–15 min walk from the Old Town, not in it.
  • English is less common here than in Berlin or Dresden; a few German phrases help.

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Jan–Feb (cold, short days) · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for DRS and LEJ: last trains, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Obermarkt, Untermarkt and the church, the Neisse bank, the station quarter.
  3. Place pages with verified hours for St. Peter and Paul, the Schönhof and the Silesian Museum, plus eat pages with last orders.
  4. Border-crossing fixture for the Zgorzelec walk, so the passport and ID rules are checked before the page goes green.
