Görlitz
Stay two nights in the Old Town: one day for the old town and the Neisse, one for the Silesian Museum and Landeskrone. Skip it as a day trip from Dresden.
Görlitz is Germany's easternmost town, on the Neiße across from Zgorzelec in Poland. It came through the war almost intact, so the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque centre is one of the best preserved in Central Europe, ringed by 19th-century tenements. It is a walkable two-night stop on the Dresden–Wrocław line, not a quick look.

Get around
The Old Town and centre are compact and walkable. Two tram lines link the suburbs to the centre; a ride to the outer suburbs takes about 15 min. Buy a ticket and validate it on boarding; tickets also work on local buses. Trams do not cross the Neiße, so cross to Zgorzelec on foot. Görlitz is in the ZVON regional network, and ZVON and Sachsen-Ticket fares cover the town.

- The station is a 10–15 min walk from the Old Town, not in it.
- English is less common here than in Berlin or Dresden; a few German phrases help.
A low-crime small city; the real risks are the border paperwork for the Zgorzelec walk, uneven cobbles after rain, and winter ice on the Landeskrone path.
