Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand, on the Chota Nagpur Plateau at about 650 m, so evenings and nights stay cooler than the plains. The city itself is a market town with a handful of museums and a lake; the draw is the ring of waterfalls and hill country around it. Two nights covers the city and one waterfall day; add a night for Netarhat.

Getting around

Autos and cycle rickshaws cover the centre; share autos run fixed routes and are cheapest but packed. For the waterfalls and Netarhat you need a hired car with driver for the day — agree the total and the waiting time before you leave. City buses run on set routes but are slow for short hops.

Watch out

Safety

Ranchi is calm by day and the main risks are traffic, monsoon water and walking unfamiliar streets after dark. Use 112 for emergencies; keep the hotel's number and a car contact on your phone.
  • Waterfalls are lethal in and after rain: do not swim or climb past barriers, and skip them in the monsoon.
  • Do not walk in unfamiliar localities after dark; ask your hotel about the area first.
  • English is limited outside hotels and offices — a few Hindi phrases and a translation app help.
  • Interstate buses and trains sell out around festivals; book rail seats early.
  • Carry small rupee notes; change is scarce at small stalls.
