Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and the base for the Kashmir Valley. The lake, the Mughal gardens and the old-city mosques are the core; Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are day trips or overnights from here. Come May–September for mild weather, or January–February for snow and the frozen lake. Security is heavy and visible; the practical risks are touts, unlicensed shikara touts and winter flight cancellations.

Getting around
Auto-rickshaws and taxis everywhere; agree the fare before you get in. Shared Sumo taxis run to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg from the TRC and Dal Gate. Local buses are cheap and cover the main sights. A shikara on Dal Lake is hired by the hour and is the only way to see the floating gardens.

Watch out
Safety
- Agree every auto, taxi and shikara price before boarding; 'no problem' means a demand at the other end.
- Carry photo ID at all times: army and police checkpoints are common, especially near the airport and Shankaracharya hill.
- Winter flights are often cancelled for fog and snow; keep a buffer day before an onward international flight.
- Foreign nationals must register on arrival at the airport or at their hotel or houseboat (check current rule).
- Shankaracharya temple: no phones or cameras inside; leave them in the vehicle.
- Some shrines and mosques restrict entry for women or non-Muslims; ask at the gate.
