  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Terrebonne is a suburb north of Montréal on the Rivière des Mille-Îles, about 25 minutes by car up Autoroute 25. Its draw is Vieux-Terrebonne and the Île-des-Moulins historic site, a compact riverside cluster of 19th-century mills and the old seigneurial complex. Most travellers see it in half a day from Montréal; one night is enough if you want dinner in the old town without the drive back.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Exo runs the Terrebonne station on the Mascouche line (line 15), which links Ahuntsic in Montréal with Mascouche; for downtown Montréal, change at Ahuntsic to metro Line 2. Exo buses serve Terminus Terrebonne. From Montréal without a car: Metro to Montmorency then Exo bus 19, or Metro to Radisson then Exo bus 30. A car is easier for the spread-out sectors of Lachenaie and La Plaine.

Montréal

go

Door to door: About 40–60 min

Autoroute 25 south, or Exo Mascouche line to Ahuntsic then metro Line 2 downtown

The obvious pairing: sleep in Montréal and day-trip Terrebonne, or reverse it.

Repentigny

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Autoroute 40 east, about 15 min

Riverside neighbour on the same shore; easy add-on by car.

Joliette

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Autoroute 40 east, about 45 min

Lanaudière's main town; pairs well as a half-day.

Berthierville

caution

Door to door: About 50 min

Autoroute 40 east, about 40 min

Small; only worth it if you are already driving the region.

Saint-Michel-des-Saints

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Autoroute 40 east then Route 131 north, about 2 h

Lakes and forest country; too far for a return day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Vieux-Terrebonne

Walk to Île-des-Moulins, the church and the restaurants on Rue Saint-Pierre. Best if you want the old town on foot.

Lachenaie

Highway-side hotels near Autoroute 640 with parking; practical for a car-based stop, no old-town walk.

La Plaine

Quieter residential sector to the north; you will drive to everything.

Watch out

Safety

Terrebonne is a low-crime Montréal suburb and safe for tourists. The real risks are winter ice, deer and moose on regional roads at dusk, and unlit riverside paths after dark.
  • A car is the practical way to reach the mills and the sectors outside the old town; buses are infrequent on weekends.
  • Winter sidewalks and the riverside path ice over; wear grippy boots.
  • Many old-town restaurants close one or two weekdays: check hours before you go.
  • Sales tax is added at the till, so the menu price is not the final price.
