Bundi is a small walled town in eastern Rajasthan, 40 km from Kota, with a hilltop fort, a painted palace and more than 50 step-wells. Two nights covers the sights at an easy pace; one night works if you arrive by the overnight train from Delhi. It is quiet, cheap and walkable, and most travellers pair it with Kota or a Jaipur–Udaipur run.

Getting around

The old town is walkable: palace gate to Nahar ka Chotta is 10–15 min uphill. Auto-rickshaws are the only public transport, roughly ₹30–50 in town and about ₹100 to the railway station. Bicycles and motorbikes rent for about ₹300 a day.

Watch out

Safety

Bundi is small and calm; the real risks are the steep unshaded climb to the fort, heat in April–June, and street touts who inflate prices. Solo women report few problems but should expect stares in the bazaar.
  • Ignore men on the street who offer to guide you or arrange services; you pay a higher rate and they keep the difference.
  • The climb to the palace and Taragarh is steep and unshaded: start early, carry water.
  • Some step-wells are dry, overgrown or fenced; Rani Ki Ji Baori is the one in good condition.
  • Trains and buses fill up around festivals; book seats a day ahead.
  • Card payment is patchy outside hotels: carry small rupee notes.
