Come to Turkistan for the Yasawi Mausoleum, the most important pilgrimage site in Kazakhstan; a half day covers the mausoleum complex, and one night lets you add the Hilvet underground mosque and Kultobe ruins.
Turkistan is a small city in southern Kazakhstan built around the 14th-century mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, commissioned by Timur (Tamerlane) and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the closest thing Kazakhstan has to a national pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors from across Central Asia, and the government has rebuilt much of the surrounding old town as a heritage park. Most travellers arrive from Shymkent as a day trip or overnight stop.
