Come to Turkistan for the Yasawi Mausoleum, the most important pilgrimage site in Kazakhstan; a half day covers the mausoleum complex, and one night lets you add the Hilvet underground mosque and Kultobe ruins.
Turkistan is a small city in southern Kazakhstan built around the 14th-century mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, commissioned by Timur (Tamerlane) and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the closest thing Kazakhstan has to a national pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors from across Central Asia, and the government has rebuilt much of the surrounding old town as a heritage park. Most travellers arrive from Shymkent as a day trip or overnight stop.

Language
Kazakh is the state language and is spreading fast, especially in the south and among young people; Russian remains the language most people use in Almaty, Astana and the north. A switch from Cyrillic to Latin script for Kazakh is planned in stages (check the timeline). English is growing in cafés, hotels and among students.

- Summer heat makes midday visits to the open mausoleum courtyard uncomfortable; go early morning or late afternoon.
- Opening times and any prayer-time closures at the mausoleum vary; check locally on arrival.
- Photography rules inside the mausoleum's inner chambers can be restricted; ask before shooting.
