  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Boise is Idaho's capital and largest city, sitting where the high desert meets the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, on the Boise River. Downtown is compact and walkable, with the Greenbelt path, a Basque Block and a cluster of museums around Julia Davis Park. Most visitors use it as a 2-night base for the foothills and the Snake River Plain, or as a stop between Salt Lake City and the Pacific Northwest. Locals say "Boy-see", not "Boy-zee".

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and the Greenbelt is a paved 40 km path along the river for bikes and on foot. Valley Regional Transit buses are thin: most routes stop around 18:45 and many do not run on Sundays. Outside the centre you need a car — rent at the airport. I-184, Capitol Blvd, State Street and Meridian Road clog at rush hour; I-84 eastbound is heavy in the morning, westbound in the afternoon.

Day-trips

Nampa

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min by car

I-84 west about 30 km, or Valley Regional Transit bus

Wine bars and a historic downtown; easy half-day.

McCall

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

State Highway 55 north through the mountains

Lake town in the Payette National Forest; too far for a relaxed return day.

Payette and Fruitland

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

I-84 west toward the Oregon border

Agricultural valley towns; go only if you are heading that way.

Mountain Home

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

I-84 southeast across the Snake River Plain

Winter storms make this stretch treacherous; check conditions first.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Capitol Boulevard

Walk to the capitol, Basque Block, museums and restaurants; paid parking, meters free after 18:00 and on weekends.

North End

Grid of older houses and dense trees, walkable to downtown in 15–25 min; quiet, residential, few hotels.

Boise Bench / Vista Ave

Cheaper chain hotels and the straight run to the airport; a car or bus needed for downtown.

Meridian / Nampa (west suburbs)

Suburban hotels near I-84; only worth it if you are driving on to Oregon or the Snake River Plain.

Watch out

Safety

Boise is a low-crime city by US standards; the real risks are summer heat and dehydration on foothills trails, winter ice, and traffic on the suburban arterials. Downtown at night is busy and well lit.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C and the air is dry: carry water on any foothills walk.
  • Winter brings ice and snow on the foothills trails and the roads east toward Mountain Home.
  • Cyclists: avoid Meridian Road and State Street west of 27th Street; stick to side streets.
  • Downtown parking is paid even when meters are not enforced; expect a US$2 minimum in a garage.
  • Ride-hailing is far more common than taxis; peak waits can run 45–60 min.
