- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
Cessnock is a working town of about 18,000 people sitting next to Australia's oldest wine region, the Lower Hunter vineyards around Pokolbin. It has the supermarkets, banks, motels and cheap meals the wine country lacks, but almost nothing worth seeing inside the town itself. Come for two nights with a car, or as a cheaper bed while you tour the valley by shuttle.

Getting around
A car is the practical answer: the vineyards, restaurants and galleries are spread across the surrounding countryside, not in town. Without one, use the hop-on hop-off valley shuttle or a booked wine tour, and Rover Coaches buses for Cessnock–Kurri Kurri and weekday links to Newcastle and Maitland. Australia's drink-driving laws are strictly enforced here, so pick a sober driver or book a tour.

Beaches, Fort Scratchley and Darby Street cafés; a full day if you add the harbour.
Maitland and Morpeth
goDoor to door: 35–45 min
Drive via the M1, about 35 min
Morpeth's antique shops and riverside cafés make a half-day.
Lake Macquarie
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Drive via the M1, about 50 min
Better as a stop on the way to or from Newcastle than a return trip.
Singleton and the Upper Hunter
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Drive via the New England Highway, about 50 min
Horse country and more wineries; worth it only if you are heading north anyway.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Vincent Street and the town centre
Motels, pubs, supermarkets and banks within a few minutes' walk; the practical choice without a car.
Wollombi Road and Wine Country Drive
More motels on the edge of town, on the road toward Pokolbin; needs a car.
Nulkaba
Five minutes' drive from Cessnock on Wine Country Drive; B&Bs and a hostel, closer to the vineyards.
Pokolbin and Lovedale
In the vineyards, not in Cessnock: resort prices, walkable to some cellar doors, no town services.
