Cuenca is Ecuador's third city and its colonial south: a river basin at about 2,500 m where the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the streets are walkable, clean and cooler than the coast. Two nights covers the centre and a viewpoint; three adds Cajas National Park or the Inca ruins at Ingapirca. It is a base for the southern Andes, not a beach or a Galápagos substitute.

Getting around

The centre is walkable and often faster than a taxi in traffic. City buses cost $0.25 (exact coins into a machine; an SIT card costs about $1.75). Taxis are $1.50–3 per trip and the fare should be agreed before you get in. The Tranvía tram runs one line with 27 stops, including the airport; a ticket was about $1 as of Dec 2023 — check the current fare.

Watch out

Safety

Cuenca is calmer and cleaner than most large Latin American cities and tap water is generally treated as drinkable here. The real risks are traffic, altitude on your first day, and petty theft in markets and on crowded buses — keep bags in front.
  • Drivers do not stop for pedestrians: look both ways even on one-way streets.
  • Agree the taxi fare before entering; not all taxis use meters.
  • Bus journeys in the southern Andes can run far longer than advertised — the Loja route is quoted at 4 h but can take 7.
  • Ingapirca is closed on Ecuadorian public holidays; check the calendar before going.
  • The Devil's Nose train from Alausí has been shut; confirm before planning around it.
