Estes Park is a small mountain town at the east entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, 90 miles (145 km) northwest of Denver. Almost everyone comes for the park: Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake, elk in autumn. The town itself is walkable in an afternoon, so the number of nights is really the number of park days you want. Summer and early autumn fill up; winter is quiet and good for snowshoeing.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable; park free in a town lot and walk a few blocks. A free shuttle bus runs from the Visitor Center with stops in town and in Rocky Mountain National Park — you still need a park pass to enter. Paved trails radiate from Lake Estes; the downtown stretch is walking only. Most visitors drive, and shoulders on main roads can be sparse.

Safety

Very safe for a tourist town; the real risks are altitude, sudden afternoon storms and wildlife. Keep 25 yards (23 m) from elk and 100 yards (91 m) from bears, and never block a road to photograph them.
  • Altitude: town sits at 7,522 ft (2,293 m). Take the first day easy, drink water, expect headaches.
  • Trail Ridge Road is seasonal — usually opens late May and closes in October depending on snow; check before you drive it.
  • You must pay a park entrance fee to enter Rocky Mountain National Park, including driving US-34 through it from Grand Lake.
  • Summer and holiday weekends sell out; book beds and park timed-entry slots ahead.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer: start hikes early and be off exposed ridges by midday.
  • Cell service is patchy in the park away from high ground.
