- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Fort Collins is a university and brewery town of about 170,000 on the Cache La Poudre River, 59 mi (95 km) north of Denver at the edge of the Front Range foothills. Old Town is compact and walkable; the reservoir and canyon need a car. Most travellers use it as a relaxed 2-night stop between Denver and Rocky Mountain National Park, or as a base for CSU visits.

Getting around
Transfort runs the MAX bus every 20 min on the Mason Corridor between the Downtown and South transit centres; other routes are roughly hourly and stop in the evening. Buses do not run on Sundays. Fares were suspended in late 2024 — check before you pay. Old Town is walkable; biking is often faster than driving at rush hour, with paved trails (Poudre, Spring Creek, Power, Mason) and bike lanes across town. A car is needed for Horsetooth Reservoir, Lory State Park and the Poudre Canyon.

Watch out
Safety
- The Poudre River is stronger than it looks: several tubing drownings are reported most years. Ask locally before tubing, and never swim in the canyon without a guide.
- Afternoon thunderstorms build fast in summer; be off exposed ridges and the reservoir by early afternoon.
- Old Town street parking is tight — use the city garages (about a quarter per hour) or the MAX.
- Transfort buses do not run on Sundays and stop in the evening; plan the last MAX back.
- Brewery tours fill up: arrive early for guided slots, and bring ID — tastings are 21+.
