Lurgan is a Plantation-era linen town 50 minutes by train from Belfast, laid out from 1610 with an unusually wide Market Street. The sights are modest and close together: a Georgian-style mansion with tea rooms, a large town park, and Lough Neagh nature reserves a short cycle away. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Belfast–Portadown line or a base for Oxford Island.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Ulsterbus 46/47 shuttles Lurgan–Craigavon–Portadown every 15 min. A network of traffic-separated cycle paths links the town to Craigavon, Rushmere and Lough Neagh. Taxis: A1 Cabs and Sun (check current numbers).

Safety

A quiet commuter town; the main risks are traffic on the M1 approach roads, uneven pavements after rain, and nothing much open late. Standard UK advice applies.
  • Trains from Belfast run about every 30 min; the Dublin–Belfast train does not stop at Lurgan, change at Portadown.
  • Buses stop on Market Street; there is no bus station.
  • Some listed eating places close or change hands; check before you walk out.
  • Lough Neagh shore paths can be muddy and midge-heavy in summer.
