Big Corn is a 70 km offshore Caribbean island of about 6,000 people, English-Creole in culture and much less developed for tourism than Little Corn. Flights from Managua take about 1.5 h in small unpressurised planes; the boat alternative is a long, erratic overland-and-sea route. Come for diving, snorkelling, fishing and the perimeter road, not for sights.

Getting around

One perimeter road circles the island, plus a few paved side roads and hill trails. Taxis charge a flat island-wide fare (about C$18) and pick up other passengers en route — normal, not a problem. Buses run island-wide for about C$5 but with no reliable timetable. Bicycles, golf carts, cars and motorcycles can be rented; a golf cart is the easiest way to see the island at your own pace.

Watch out

Safety

Relatively safe with few traveller incidents, but violent incidents have happened: take taxis after dark, keep valuables out of sight, and expect evening alcohol-fuelled hassle near bars.
  • Power cuts are routine, often nightly and always in heavy rain: confirm the hotel has its own generator before booking.
  • There is one ATM on both Corn Islands (Banpro, Brigg Bay) and it may be empty or offline: bring enough cash, and US dollar bills must be unmarked and untorn or they will be refused.
  • No street lighting: take a taxi after dark.
  • Food is cooked to order and can take 40–60 minutes; order before you are hungry.
  • Lobster tails under about 12 cm or 140 g are illegal to sell — if offered, it is out of season.
  • Sand flies bite on beaches in the evening and after rain.
  • Litter, plastic bottles and trash on many of the smaller beaches.
