Porto is Portugal's second city, built on a cliff above the Douro estuary, with a UNESCO-listed historic centre and the port cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river. It is compact but steep: most sights sit within a 30-minute walk of each other, and the metro covers the rest. Two nights is the minimum; three lets you add the Douro or the coast.

Getting around

The metro (Andante card, €0.60 reusable) is the fastest way across the city and to the airport; buses fill the gaps. The centre is walkable but hilly — expect stairs and cobbles. Tram 1 runs along the river to Foz. Validate your Andante before every ride: inspectors fine at least €100.

Watch out

Safety

Porto is a safe city for tourists; the real risks are pickpockets in the Ribeira and on tram 1, the steep cobbles after rain, and riverfront restaurants with no posted prices — ask the total before you sit.
  • Validate your Andante ticket before boarding; the fine is at least €100 (≈ US$120).
  • The centre is very hilly with cobbles and stairs — wear grippy shoes, not heels.
  • Pickpockets work the Ribeira, São Bento and tram 1; keep phones out of back pockets.
  • Restaurants on the Ribeira riverfront often charge more for the view; check the menu before sitting.
  • Driving in the centre is slow and parking is scarce; use the metro and walk.
