Porto
Give Porto 2–3 nights: Ribeira and the bridge on day one, a Gaia port cellar and the Foz tram on day two, and a Douro day trip if you have a third.
Porto is Portugal's second city, built on a cliff above the Douro estuary, with a UNESCO-listed historic centre and the port cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river. It is compact but steep: most sights sit within a 30-minute walk of each other, and the metro covers the rest. Two nights is the minimum; three lets you add the Douro or the coast.

Get around
The metro (Andante card, €0.60 reusable) is the fastest way across the city and to the airport; buses fill the gaps. The centre is walkable but hilly — expect stairs and cobbles. Tram 1 runs along the river to Foz. Validate your Andante before every ride: inspectors fine at least €100.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek socially; handshake in business; avoid: Hugging strangers
- Language: Start with 'bom dia' or 'boa tarde'; avoid: Assuming Spanish will do
- Queues: Wait your turn; take a ticket at pharmacies and post offices; avoid: Pushing onto trams
- Titles: Use 'senhor' and 'senhora' and professional titles ('Doutor'); avoid: First names with older people until invited
- Meals: Relax — service is unhurried; avoid: Asking for Spanish-style tapas late at night in small towns
Scams and watch-outs
- Validate your Andante ticket before boarding; the fine is at least €100.
- The centre is very hilly with cobbles and stairs — wear grippy shoes, not heels.
- Pickpockets work the Ribeira, São Bento and tram 1; keep phones out of back pockets.
- Restaurants on the Ribeira riverfront often charge more for the view; check the menu before sitting.
- Driving in the centre is slow and parking is scarce; use the metro and walk.
Porto is a safe city for tourists; the real risks are pickpockets in the Ribeira and on tram 1, the steep cobbles after rain, and riverfront restaurants with no posted prices — ask the total before you sit.
