Cali is Colombia's salsa capital and the party city of the southwest, sitting in a warm valley at about 1,000 m. The draw is nightlife, the San Antonio hill neighbourhood and Pacific-coast food, not a checklist of monuments. Two nights covers the centre and one big night out; a third buys you a day trip to San Cipriano or the birding road toward Buenaventura.

Getting around

Taxis are cheap and the default; ask your hotel to call one and check the meter is running. The MIO bus system runs in dedicated lanes with card-only payment. Walking works in Granada, El Peñón and San Antonio by day, but the city is long and hot, so plan on taxis between clusters.

Watch out

Safety

Cali is a normal big Colombian city: fine in the tourist zones by day, more careful after dark. Use apps or hotel-called taxis, keep phones out of sight on the street, and don't hike the hills alone.
  • Do not walk up to Cristo Rey or the Tres Cruces hill alone; go with a group, a guide or on a Sunday morning when the trails are busy.
  • San Antonio and the centre get quiet and less safe after dark; take a taxi for the last stretch.
  • Use only official taxis ordered by phone or app, and never leave bags in the trunk.
  • Salsa clubs in Juanchito and Menga are far from the centre; agree the fare or use an app both ways.
  • April–May and October–November are the rainiest months; afternoon downpours are normal.
