Pereira is the capital of Risaralda and the biggest city in the Zona Cafetera, sitting in a warm valley at about 1,400 m between Bogotá, Medellín and Cali. It is a working university city rather than a sight town: most travellers use it for the airport, the bus terminal, a night out on Avenida Simón Bolívar and as a launch point for Salento, Cocora and the Santa Rosa hot springs. Two nights is enough; the coffee villages are the reason you came.

Getting around

Megabus (green buses, exclusive lanes) runs about 04:30–23:35; buy a Megatarjeta card at a station and top it up. City buses cost around COP$2,000–3,000. Taxis are metered and cheap; insist the meter is on or agree the fare first. Walking works in the centre by day, less so between the centre and the malls.

Safety

Pereira is a normal Colombian city: the centre and the mall districts are fine by day, use taxis at night, and avoid the southern barrios of Cuba and Villa Santana. The bigger risks are traffic, rain on mountain roads and unmetered taxis.
  • Some southern barrios, including Cuba and Villa Santana, are best avoided, especially at night.
  • Taxi drivers may add charges for stops or waiting, or run without a meter: agree the price first.
  • Heavy rain can close mountain roads and cause landslides on the Salento and Santa Rosa routes.
  • Tap water is drinkable in Pereira, but not everywhere in Colombia.
