  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Capitola is a small Monterey Bay beach town about 6 miles (10 km) east of Santa Cruz, built around a compact village, a sheltered beach and a wharf. It is a half-day to one-day stop, not a base for a whole trip: most visitors sleep here one or two nights and use it as a quieter, walkable alternative to Santa Cruz.

Getting around

The village, beach and wharf are walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Santa Cruz Metro buses 66, 68 and 69 run between Santa Cruz Metro Center and Capitola Mall (about $2, check current fare). Bicycle or rideshare for the 2-mile hop to New Brighton. A car helps for anything beyond the village; Highway 1 exits at 41st Avenue, Park Avenue or Bay Porter.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Capitola Village / Esplanade

Walk to beach, wharf and restaurants. Highest prices, smallest rooms; book weeks ahead for summer weekends.

41st Avenue corridor

Chain hotels and motels 5–10 min drive uphill from the village; free parking, better value, you drive to the beach.

Depot Hill / Monterey Avenue

Quiet residential edge of the village, 5–10 min walk to the sand; inns and small hotels.

New Brighton / Soquel Drive

Near the state beach and campground; good if you want the beach without village prices.

Watch out

Safety

Capitola is a low-crime beach town; the real risks are cold water, rip currents, summer parking and petty theft from cars left overnight near the beach.
  • Summer weekend parking in the village fills by mid-morning; use the pay lots off Monterey Avenue or park on 41st Avenue and walk down.
  • Ocean water here is cold year-round (often 13–16 °C): swimming is short, wetsuits are normal for surfing.
  • Rip currents and shorebreak at City Beach and New Brighton; watch children near the wharf pilings.
  • Marine layer fog can sit over the bay until midday even in summer — plan beach time for the afternoon.
  • Many village kitchens close by 21:00 outside summer; check hours before a late dinner.
