Geleen is a former coal town of about 32,000 people in the Sittard-Geleen municipality, in Dutch Limburg. The mines closed by the 1970s and the chemical plant stayed, so the town is industrial rather than pretty. Travellers use it for two things: a cheap bed near the A2/A76 with Maastricht 17 min away by train, and the Geleander Kirmes fair in late spring. Two to three hours on foot is enough for the centre.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min. Two stations: Geleen-Lutterade (trains to Sittard and Maastricht, about 17 min) and Geleen-Oost (Sittard 7 min, Heerlen 18 min). Regional buses leave from the bus station by the centre; a bike is the fastest way to reach Spaubeek or the Glanerbrook leisure centre.

Watch out

Safety

Geleen is a normal Dutch town and feels safe by day and evening. The real issues are bikes on the pavement, quiet streets after the bars close, and wet cobbles on the market square: nothing that changes your plans.
  • The chemical site is working industry: no access, and no reason to walk toward it.
  • Regional trains stop early in the evening on some lines: check the last departure before you plan a late return.
  • Some listed restaurants and hotels have changed hands since the town was last written up: check opening hours before you go.
