Sousse is Tunisia's Sahel coast base: a UNESCO-listed medina with a ribat and mosaic museum, a long beach strip, and the country's best rail and louage links south. Two nights covers the medina and the beach and leaves one full day for Kairouan or El Jem. It is a working city, not a resort bubble, and the hotel zone north of the centre has empty, closed properties mixed with open ones.

Getting around

The medina is walkable; everything else is taxi, louage or light rail. Taxis are yellow with a meter — check it is reset to the 0.500 DT standing charge before you move, and agree the fare first if the driver refuses. Louages (shared taxis) leave from the station south of the medina on Rue El Masjed El Aksa and cover most towns; the light rail from Bab Jdid runs to Monastir and Mahdia via the airport.

Walk to the ribat, mosque and museum; train station 5–10 min on foot. Best for 1–2 nights without a car.

Port El Kantaoui

Purpose-built marina 12 km north; tuk-tuk or mini-train about 2–2.5 DT. Quiet outside high season.

Watch out

Safety

Street crime is low and the medina is busy late; the real issues are taxi meters, aggressive souk selling and the 2015 attack legacy — check your government's current advisory before booking.
  • Taxi meters: insist on the reset and the day rate; a Sousse–Port El Kantaoui run is about 4.1 DT on the meter, more on a 'special rate' — agree 5–6 DT before you get in.
  • Alcohol is not sold on Fridays; hard liquor only at state Magasin Général stores.
  • Some beachfront hotels and clubs north of the centre are permanently closed — confirm your booking is open before paying.
  • The Sousse catacombs have been closed for reconstruction since 2016: check before planning around them.
  • Souk prices are quoted high; bargain, and walk away if you cannot agree.
