Pangkor is an 8 km² island off Perak, about 100 km west of Ipoh and roughly halfway between Kuala Lumpur and Penang. It is a local resort island, not a Penang or Langkawi rival: fishing villages on the east coast, small beaches on the west, one ring road, no metered taxis. Two nights covers it; three if you want a slow beach day. Weekdays are quiet, weekends and Malaysian public holidays are busy and pricier.

Getting around

No metered taxis: bright pink microvans wait at the jetty and airport, and fares are posted at the pier — agree the price first. Sample fares (2024, check): jetty–Teluk Nipah RM18–30, jetty–Pasir Bogak RM12–15, jetty–Sungai Pinang RM10–15. Motorbike rental runs about RM30–40 a day and bicycles from about RM8; the ring road is steep on the north side, so test the brakes. Ferries from Lumut take up to 45 min; the Marina Island crossing is about 10 min.

Watch out

Safety

Pangkor is a low-crime island; the real risks are uninsured motorbike rentals, steep north-loop roads, monsoon-season boat cancellations and strong sun. Keep valuables in a hotel safe and agree fares before boarding.
  • Weekends and Malaysian public holidays: rooms cost more and beaches fill; book ahead or shift to weekdays.
  • Unregulated motorbike rentals: no insurance cover to speak of, and steep gradients on the north loop.
  • Plastic debris and driftwood on some beaches; sea lice have been reported. Check locally before swimming.
  • Monsoon-season crossings and boat trips can be cancelled at short notice.
  • Agree every microvan fare before you get in; there is no meter.
