Atotonilco El Alto is a working town of about 29,000 people at roughly 1,600 m in the Jalisco highlands, on the Los Altos tequila route. Patron, Don Julio and Siete Leguas all distil here, but most of them do not run walk-in tours, so the town works best as a base for a booked distillery tour plus a plaza, a church and a former railway museum. Two nights is plenty; one night plus a tour is the common shape.

Getting around

Walking covers the centro: plaza, church, market and bus terminal are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Distilleries and the Patron hacienda sit outside town on MEX-90, so you need a car, a taxi or a tour van. Taxis wait near the plaza and the bus station, or ask your hotel to call one.

Watch out

Safety

Atotonilco is a small working town and the centro is calm; the real risks are the unlit highway shoulders around the distilleries, cold highland nights and drinking tequila on an empty stomach before a drive.
  • Distillery tours are not walk-in: Don Julio and Siete Leguas do not run scheduled public tours, so book through a tour operator and confirm which distilleries are included.
  • The bus terminal waiting room is basic and the restrooms charge a small fee; arrive close to departure.
  • Highland nights are cold from November to February: bring a jacket.
  • Check the Museo de la Estacion opening days before you go; it has been weekend-only.
