Riverhead, town, New YorkRiverhead
Base in Riverhead for 1–2 nights to do the North Fork wineries and the aquarium; skip it as a day trip from Manhattan (2.5 h each way by train).
Riverhead is the seat of Suffolk County and the western gateway to Long Island's North Fork, a rural peninsula of vineyards, farm stands and shoreline parks about 120 km east of New York City. Most visitors come for wine tasting, the Long Island Aquarium, Tanger Outlets and the water park at Calverton. It is a car-first destination: the LIRR reaches the hamlet, but the wineries and parks are spread along Route 25 and Sound Avenue.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical way to move between the hamlet, the wineries and the state parks; Route 25 runs east–west through the town and the Long Island Expressway ends at exit 73 near Calverton. The LIRR Ronkonkoma branch stops at Riverhead station, but from there you need a taxi, rideshare or bike to reach most sights. Parking is free at the outlets, the aquarium and the parks.
