Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Weißenburg is a small Franconian town on the Nuremberg–Treuchtlingen–Augsburg rail line, with a largely intact medieval wall, a Gothic town hall and two Roman sites that together make it the best Roman stop in Middle Franconia. The old town is walkable in an afternoon; the Wülzburg fortress sits on a hill about 2 km east. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Nuremberg and the Altmühl valley, but one night lets you eat and drink in the old town after the day-trippers leave.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town is small enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes. The Wülzburg is about 2 km east and uphill: walk it in 25–30 min or take a taxi. Buses are limited; a car helps for the Brombachsee and the Altmühl valley. Trains run to Nuremberg and Treuchtlingen, roughly hourly, half-hourly at peak (check VGN).

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h

Regional train from Weißenburg station

Hourly, more at peak; the obvious big-city day out.

Treuchtlingen and the Altmühl valley

go

Door to door: About 30 min to Treuchtlingen

Train to Treuchtlingen, then bus or bike into the valley

Rail junction; gateway to Pappenheim, Dollnstein and Eichstätt.

Brombachsee

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min by car

Car or bike; buses are thin

Lake with swimming and cycling; awkward without a car.

Door to door: About 2 h

Train via Ansbach or Treuchtlingen, changes required

Better as an overnight than a return day trip.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town around Marktplatz

Hotels and guesthouses inside the wall; everything on foot. Best for one night.

Near the station (Bahnhofstraße)

Practical for early trains; 5–10 min walk to the Marktplatz.

Ellinger Tor area

Quiet edge of the old town by the eastern gate; a short walk to the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the unlit climb to the Wülzburg after dark, cobbles and uneven wall steps, and bikes on the ring road: watch the kerb, not the crime.
  • The Wülzburg is a climb: no lift, cobbles and slopes at the top.
  • Roman baths open 15 Mar–15 Nov only; closed in winter.
  • RömerMuseum closes for lunch (12:30–14:00) and on Mondays.
  • Small-town restaurants keep limited hours and rest days; check before you walk out.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Marktplatz, the wall and Ellinger Tor, the Roman sites, the Wülzburg.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (RömerMuseum, Roman baths, Wülzburg) and eat pages with rest days and last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
