Weißenburg is a small Franconian town on the Nuremberg–Treuchtlingen–Augsburg rail line, with a largely intact medieval wall, a Gothic town hall and two Roman sites that together make it the best Roman stop in Middle Franconia. The old town is walkable in an afternoon; the Wülzburg fortress sits on a hill about 2 km east. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Nuremberg and the Altmühl valley, but one night lets you eat and drink in the old town after the day-trippers leave.
