Bled is a small lakeside town in the Julian Alps, about 55 km northwest of Ljubljana, built around a 2.1 km lake with an island church and a clifftop castle. It is the main base for Triglav National Park and the Vintgar Gorge. Two nights covers the town; three lets you add a valley day.

Getting around

The town and lake circuit are walkable: a full lap of the lake takes just over an hour. Pletna boats and rental rowboats reach the island. Buses link Bled with Ljubljana hourly; a hire car is far easier for Vintgar, Bohinj and the Soča valley.

Safety

Bled is a very safe small town. The real risks are cold lake water, unmarked swim spots, slippery gorge boardwalks and traffic on the road around the lake.
  • Pletna fare is fixed and cash-only; boats wait for about ten passengers before leaving.
  • Vintgar Gorge is ticketed and timed in season: book ahead or you may be turned away.
  • Bled prices run above the Slovenian average; check the bill before paying.
  • Swim only in the marked bathing areas; the lake is cold even in August.
