Çorlu is the first big town west of Istanbul on the historic Edirne road, grown fast on textiles and now home to around 280,000 people. Its old wooden houses are gone, replaced by concrete blocks, and the few sights are minor: a 1521 mosque, a rebuilt 1840 mosque, a small Atatürk house. Almost everyone comes here on business, or passes through on the way to Edirne, Tekirdağ or the Gallipoli peninsula.

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact and walkable; Salih Omurtak Cd is the main drag and Atatürk Blvd crosses the south of town. City buses take a bus card or a debit/credit card and no cash. Cycling is possible but Turkish drivers give cyclists no room, so treat it as risky. Car hire is available in the centre, though airport pick-up usually has more choice.

Watch out

Safety

Çorlu is a working industrial town rather than a tourist one: petty theft is the usual city risk and the outlying districts are best avoided. The bigger issues are poor winter air, suspect tap water and roads that ignore cyclists.
  • Several rough outlying districts, including the north-western Kore Mahallesi; there is no reason to go there.
  • Tap water is suspect: drink bottled.
  • Air quality is poor, especially in winter.
  • The otogar is small and the approach streets congested, so long-distance coaches stop at the malls east of town instead of the centre.
  • The express from Sofia and Bucharest passes through in the small hours without stopping; the nearest stop is Çerkezköy, 26 km north.
