Burns is a small high-desert town in Harney County, eastern Oregon, at the junction of US 20 and US 395. It is the last real service town before long empty drives to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the Diamond Craters and Steens Mountain. Almost everyone arrives by car; the bus runs once a day and the airport is general aviation only. Two nights covers the refuge and one Steens day.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights sit 30–100 km apart on two-lane highways with no transit. Fuel up in Burns or Hines before heading to Frenchglen or Fields. In town, Broadway Ave and Oregon Ave are walkable in 15–20 minutes.

Safety

Burns itself is quiet and low-crime; the real risks are the drives — long empty distances, heat, smoke, ice and no phone signal. Tell someone your route before a Steens or Alvord day.
  • Distances are long and cell coverage drops on the Steens and refuge back roads: carry water, a spare tyre and offline maps.
  • Summer brings heat, dust and wildfire smoke; check air quality and fire restrictions before a Steens day.
  • Steens Mountain loop roads are seasonal and can be closed by snow or washout — check current conditions.
  • Some refuge and hot-spring access is on gravel or private-adjacent land: stay on signed routes.
  • Winter driving on US 20 and US 395 can mean ice and temporary closures.
