Egmont National Park is a near-perfect circle of forest and alpine scrub wrapped around Mount Taranaki, a dormant stratovolcano that rises straight out of dairy pasture. It was New Zealand's second national park, set aside in 1900, and the boundary is drawn as a 9.6 km radius from the summit. There is no gate and no entry fee: you drive up one of three sealed access roads, park, and walk. Most visitors come for a half-day — Dawson Falls, the Goblin Forest, the Pouakai crossing — and never go above the bushline. The summit is a different proposition, with ice axe and crampons in winter and a serious weather record year-round.

- The North Egmont visitor centre, car park and cafeteria are step-free, with a short gravel path to a view of the mountain.
- Dawson Falls visitor centre and the first section of the Goblin Forest track are reachable by car with a firm gravel surface; the falls themselves need steps.
- The summit, Fanthams Peak, Pouakai and the round-the-mountain tracks are rough, steep and not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Use the hut ticket system and pack out everything, including food scraps.
- Keep to boardwalks over the Ahukawakawa Swamp; the peat is thousands of years old and does not recover from trampling.
- Do not feed or approach birds, and keep dogs out of the park entirely.
- Check for didymo and clean boots and gear between waterways.

How much does it cost to enter Egmont National Park?
Nothing. There is no gate and no entry fee for day access, and DOC does not charge for walking the tracks. You pay only for optional extras: a DOC hut ticket (about NZ$15–40 per night, 2026 estimate), the Camphouse or Konini Lodge, or a day pass at the small Manganui ski area.
What are the best hikes in Egmont National Park?
For a short walk, the Dawson Falls and Goblin Forest loop (1–2 hours) from the Dawson Falls car park. For a full day, the Pouakai Crossing (6–8 hours) from North Egmont to Mangorei Road, over the tarns. The summit route (8–10 hours) is a serious climb and needs alpine gear outside summer.
When is the best time to visit Egmont National Park?
February and March for the most settled weather, or November and December for long days before the summer crowds. January is warm but busy. From May to October expect snow and ice above the bushline, and treat the summit as a winter climb.
Do I need a permit or booking?
No permit for day walks. You need a hut ticket for overnight stays in DOC huts, and the Camphouse and Konini Lodge must be booked. Konini Lodge has been closed for structural repairs since September 2024, so check before relying on it.
Can I drive to the summit?
No. Sealed roads reach North Egmont, Dawson Falls and East Egmont, and the tracks start from those car parks. The summit is a 8–10 hour return climb on scree, rock and often ice.
Is there food in the park?
Only at North Egmont, where the visitor centre has a small cafeteria serving basic food. Elsewhere bring your own supplies and water; there is nothing at Dawson Falls or East Egmont.
How do I avoid the crowds?
Start before 9:00, especially on fine summer weekends, and use Dawson Falls or East Egmont rather than North Egmont. The Pouakai and round-the-mountain tracks are quiet once you are an hour from the car park.
