Rétság is a small town of about 2,800 people in the Danube Bend region, 55 km north of Budapest, halfway between Vác and Balassagyarmat. Its rail link closed in 2007, so buses from Budapest-Újpest-Városkapu (about 1 h, HUF 1,120) are the only direct route. The town itself holds a Baroque church, a Lutheran belfry and a local history room; the real draw is the surrounding Börzsöny villages, lakes and castle ruins. Most travellers pass through or use it as a half-day stop, not a base.

Rétság is a quiet small town and feels safe; the practical risks are unlit rural roads at night, deer on the road if you drive, and closed museums if you arrive without an appointment.
